Lake Kawana

Writer: Dana PentzDana Pentz

Lake Kawana graces our apartment building's backyard. It's a fabulous artificial lake designed in the 1960s to incorporate existing waterways into the community. Since then, the lake's surroundings have been developed according to the master plan, connecting several small towns and gracing the area with miles of paved walk/bike trails, residential homes, and water sports.

The surrounding architecture is quite modern as demonstrated by clean lines and modern materials. There are also wonderful windows and clear balcony/pool surrounds. Lovely homes and landscapes may be seen along the Kawana Loop, a walk/bike path of over seven miles.

While strolling the Kawana Loop, especially near pathway access points, visitors will see pockets of deliberately planted vegetation with accompanying "Bio-Retention Basin" signage. Bio-retention basins use nature to filter pollutants from the water before the run-off reaches Lake Kawana. The water is clear, allowing passersby visibility into the water. Schools of fish are a common sight as is the occasional sting ray.

Until Next Time,

Dana
